New York City Trilogy – #3 – People (and one happy bird)

With a population of 20 million people, New York City is a great place to people-watch.  Every language you can imagine.  And it’s free!

Spring in New York City – A Trilogy – #1 Spring Flowers

For the past few days I have been wandering around New York City.  April is a great time to visit.  Spring flowers and trees in blossom. Perfect temperature for walking from one end of Manhattan to the other.

Since a picture is worth 1000 words  I will stick to photos instead of exposition. It will be a trilogy.          Spring Flowers  – Icons  – People

It’s winter folks! Embrace it.

Today has been a beautiful, cold, crisp, clear wintery day in Kingston. Fresh white snow, blue skies, lots of sunshine. My friends in Africa would find this unbelievable. The sun is shining and it is minus 10 degrees. But if you bundle up and soak in the beauty it is truly incredible.

A few photos to prove it.

A few moments of respite after a harrowing week

It’s been an emotional week in Canada.  if you are like me you have shed some tears and emerged feeling proud to be Canadian and a sense of unity for the country that is palpable and, I hope, lasting.  I invite you to take three minutes to sit back, put this full screen, turn up your audio and enjoy these tranquil photos of wonderful Canadian autumn that I have compiled this week. May we all find peace.

Ahhh, Summer

It has been a treat this week to walk to work in summer sunshine past gardens filled with brightly coloured flowers.  Sure is different from winter!  I want to share some of these beauties with you.Pansy_filteredLily2 basketDSC00574Lily copy hollyhock

Bosnian Post(ers)

When I visited Bosnia in the spring the weather was particularly cool and damp. I wondered if my photos would be a bit dreary. I was looking through my pictures last night and realized that many of them held vibrant colour and they cried out to me for a poster treatment. So here are a few of my photos, posterized. I don’t usually tart my photos up this way but I kind of like these.  Enjoy a brief visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Dubrovnik – Orange roofs

Dubrovnik is famous for the Roman wall that is almost 2km long and surrounds the old city.  From the wall, you can look down into the city and over the orange tile roofs that make it a spectacular view. Lots of laundry hanging out in the little alleyways. Churches and homes and restaurants and people.  A fascinating way to spend the afternoon.

i have put together a little 2 minute Youtube video of photos of the roofs of Dubrovnik. I hope you like orange.

The scenic route into Montenegro

We took the scenic route from Mostar in the Herzegovina part of Bosnia  to Kotor, Montenegro over very winding roads, up and down. Over (and in some cases, though) mountains and into valleys, eventually ending up at sea level.

Sometimes we were in sunshine, other times pouring rain or more accurately in the middle if a rain cloud, high in the mountains.  We passed through the spectacular Piva canyon and over a series of narrow hairpin curves on the mountain above Kotor.  I took advantage of any moment of clarity or light to get some photos, which were probably made even moodier by the unpredictable visibility.

A beautiful day’s drive that ended us in the old town of Kotor, snuggled into a fiord that fingers in from the Adriatic.

We emerged momentarily from a cloud and pouring rain to catch a glimpse of sunlight reflecting from water in the fiord below us like a mirror. I thought the prospects of getting any photo were slim but life is full of surprises. This turned out to be one of my favourites of the day.
